Armenian Filmmaker and Political Activist: Tigran Khzmalyan
Early Life and EducationTigran Khzmalyan was born in Armenia and pursued his higher education at Yerevan State University, graduating with a degree in Philology in 1984. He then enrolled in the Moscow-based Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors from 1990 to 1992. In 1994 and 1998, he attended advanced writing workshops organized by Reuters and the BBC in London, UK.
Film Career
Khzmalyan established himself as an independent Armenian filmmaker, writer, and producer. He served as general director of the Yerevan Film Studio from 1998 to 2005, overseeing its operations until its closure.
Political Activism
Khzmalyan has been actively involved in Armenian politics and social movements. He participated in the Karabakh movement from 1988 to 1990 and served as a military correspondent for several Armenian and international media outlets in Nagorno-Karabakh from 1991 to 1993. He also held the position of information aide to the chairman of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Supreme Council.
From 1993 to 1996, Khzmalyan worked as a political analyst for the Armenian Assembly of America in Washington, D.C. He later served as deputy director of the United Nations Development Program in Armenia from 1997 to 1998.
Founding of Political Movements
In 2009, Khzmalyan co-founded the Sardarapat Movement with Zhirair Sefilian and Alexander Yenikmshyan. This movement was later renamed the Pre-Parliament. In 2018, he established the European Party of Armenia with his supporters and was elected its co-chairman.
