Tilo Wolff: Gothic Rock Icon and Creative Visionary
Early Life and InfluencesTilo Wolff was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, but soon moved with his family to Switzerland, settling near Basel. From the age of 12, he began writing stories that were published in literary journals. After finishing school, Wolff chose not to pursue further education, opting instead to write for magazines and play the trumpet and piano.
Musical Beginnings and Lacrimosa
Wolff's first songs were recorded in 1989. He also founded the record label "Hall of Sermon." In 1990, he formed the gothic rock band Lacrimosa, with whom he has released numerous albums. Wolff serves as the band's vocalist and keyboardist, and has taken up the trumpet as well since 2005.
Rise to Prominence
Lacrimosa's 1995 album "Inferno" reached the top of the German charts, earning Wolff the "Alternative Rock Music Award" in 1996. His early stage persona featured an elaborate mohawk, gothic makeup, and baroque costumes. However, as his musical expression matured, he gradually shed these elements.
Studio Abbey Road and Elodia
In 1999, Wolff fulfilled his dream of recording an album at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra. The resulting album, "Elodia," showcased his evolving musical depth. Subsequent albums, such as "Fassade" and "Echos," delved even deeper into classical influences.
Religious Beliefs
Wolff is a devout Christian. "I follow all the canons of the Christian religion and even go to church," he has stated. "But I am not a Catholic. I don't like the forms in which the Catholic Church embodies faith."
Other Projects
In addition to Lacrimosa, Wolff has collaborated on various projects. He has guest-sung on albums by Christian Doerge, Illuminate, Dreams of Sanity, Kreator, Witt, and Cinema Bizarre.
