Birth and Childhood
Early Military CareerBorn in February 1887 into a family of Cossack military personnel, T.N. Domanov embarked on a military career at a young age. He fought in World War I as a member of the Russian Imperial Army, becoming a full George Cavalier and attaining the rank of Ensign by 1917.
Revolution and Civil War
Following the Russian Revolution, Domanov initially joined the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. However, in 1918, he was captured by German forces and transferred to the Don Cossack Army, which opposed the Red Army. As a commander of the Gunidorian George Regiment, Domanov participated in numerous battles against Soviet forces.
Post-Civil War Life
In 1920, Domanov remained in Soviet Russia, where he worked as a miner in Shakhty from 1925. His life took a turn in 1934 when he was accused of embezzlement and arrested. Subsequently, he was recruited as a secret agent by the NKVD, providing information that led to arrests, including that of his brother.
World War II
Collaboration with the NazisWith the outbreak of World War II, Domanov's loyalties shifted. Released from prison with a mission from the NKVD, he remained in occupied territory to conduct covert operations. In November 1942, he joined the Cossack Ataman's staff in Shakhty. As a representative of the Ataman, Domanov commanded a Cossack troop that carried out policing duties in the occupied areas.
Rise in Ranks
Domanov's collaboration with the Nazis led to his rapid rise in rank. By June 1944, he had become the March Ataman of the Cossack Stan and a member of the Main Administration of Cossack Forces of the German Ministry for Eastern Occupied Territories. His troops fought against Soviet partisans and participated in suppressing the Warsaw Uprising.
Endgame
Surrender and ExecutionWith the tide turning against Germany, Domanov's Cossack forces retreated to Italy. On May 7, 1945, he surrendered to British forces, only to be handed over to Soviet authorities on May 29. On January 16, 1947, Domanov was sentenced to death by hanging for treason and other crimes. His sentence was carried out the same day in Moscow.
Legacy
A Figure of ControversyT.N. Domanov's wartime actions remain a source of historical controversy. Some view him as a traitor who collaborated with the Nazis, while others contend that he was compelled to do so in order to protect his people. His case was reviewed by the Russian Supreme Court in 1997, and his rehabilitation was denied.
