Timothy Atouba
Timothy Atouba (born February 26, 1982) is a former Cameroonian footballer. He played as a defender for the Cameroon national team and notably for Dutch club AFC Ajax.
Early Career and Tottenham Hotspur
Atouba began his career in Cameroon before joining Basel in 2000. He played there for four seasons before signing for Tottenham Hotspur in June 2004. However, despite making several impressive starts at right-back for Spurs, he failed to establish himself as a regular and managed just one goal in his spell in London.
Hamburger SV and Gesture Incident
In 2005, Atouba moved to German club Hamburger SV. He became a regular in the Bundesliga and caught the eye of Martin Jol, who later became manager of Ajax. In 2006, he played in the UEFA Champions League for Hamburg and made several high-profile errors that led to goals. Following a gesture towards the crowd, he was sent off by the referee.
AFC Ajax
In 2009, Jol signed Atouba for Ajax on a two-year contract. He spent three seasons with the Dutch giants, winning the KNVB Cup in 2010.
International Career
Atouba represented Cameroon at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. The team finished top of their group but lost in the quarter-finals.
Later Career
After leaving Ajax, Atouba had spells with Luzerne and FC Sion before retiring in 2016.
