Early Life and Education
Timothy Kopra was born on November 15, 1959, in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. In 1982, he graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry.
Military Career
Kopra enlisted in the U.S. Army and distinguished himself as a pilot in the 1-st Armored Division. He also served in the 82-nd Airborne Division and rose through the ranks of various leadership positions.
Academic Achievements
In 1992, Kopra earned a Master of Science in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later became an assistant professor in the United States Military Academy's physics department.
Spaceflight Assignments
In 1995, Kopra joined the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. As chief of the integration test branch, he played a pivotal role in supporting eight Space Shuttle missions.
NASA Career
Kopra became a NASA astronaut in 1998. He has logged over 567 hours in space during two Space Shuttle flights: STS-121 in 2006 and STS-127 in 2009.
Family and Interests
Kopra is married and has two children. He enjoys tennis, running, cycling, scuba diving, and learning German. He is also an avid tech enthusiast.
