Early Life and EducationKwasi Danquah, known by his stage name Tinchy Stryder (born June 10, 1987), is a Ghanaian British pop-rap vocalist who hails from Bow, East London. He attended a Catholic school in Forest Gate, Newham, and later enrolled at the local University of East London. In 2009, Kwasi graduated with a BA in Moving Image and Animation.
Musical Beginnings
Stryder's musical career began at the tender age of 14 when he performed on a pirate radio station in East London alongside renowned MCs such as Wiley and Dizzee Rascal. He derived his stage name from the video game "Strider," which he loved playing as a child, while "Tinchy" originated from his childhood nickname, given to him due to his diminutive stature. Standing at 5 feet 1 inch, Stryder is one of the shortest male artists to ever top the UK Top 40 chart.
Breakthrough and Rise to Fame
In 2007, Stryder released his debut album, "Star in the Hood," under Takeover Entertainment. The album featured hit singles "Breakaway" and "Something about Your Smile." Stryder's career gained significant momentum from 2006 onwards with guidance from Takeover Entertainment agents Archie Lamb and Jack Forster. Archie Lamb's father, Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb, provided Stryder with a valuable connection between the world of grime and politics.
In 2008, Stryder collaborated with Craig David on his single "Where's Your Love." He also featured on Gang Gang Dance's track "Princes" from their album "Saint Dymphna." Stryder's own single "Stryderman" marked his first entry into the UK Singles Chart, debuting at number 73.
Chart-topping Success with "Take Me Back" and "Number 1"
Stryder's breakthrough hit came with "Take Me Back," his collaboration with Taio Cruz released in January 2009. The song quickly became a radio and television staple. On April 26, 2009, Stryder solidified his status as a rising star by reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart with his follow-up single "Number 1," featuring N-Dubz. This single marked Stryder's highest-charting success to date.
