YBN Nahmir: Southern Hip-Hop Star
American rapper and songwriter YBN Nahmir has made waves in the music industry with his authentic style, captivating lyrics, and energetic performances. From his humble beginnings to his rise to fame, Nahmir's journey has been marked by determination, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of success.
Childhood and Adolescence
Born on December 18, 1999, in Birmingham, Alabama, YBN Nahmir's real name is Nicolas Simmons. Raised by a single mother, cousins, and aunt, he grew up in a crime-ridden neighborhood where his cousins were involved in illegal activities. Nahmir attended Clay-Chalkville High School and developed a passion for rapping at the age of seven, though initially he did not take it seriously.
Online Gaming and the Birth of YBN
In 2013, Nahmir's life was transformed when he received an Xbox 360 as a gift, immersing himself in the world of video games. He spent countless hours playing Grand Theft Auto V and Rock Band, streaming live with friends Cordae and Almighted Jay. From this online community, the collective YBN (Young Black Nas) was born, inspiring its members to pursue their dreams and avoid falling into the trap of working for someone else.
Music Breakthrough
Nahmir's musical journey began in 2014 when he released the single "Hood Mentality" on the internet. While it didn't make a significant impact, his subsequent track "Why" gained some traction. The breakthrough came in 2017 with the release of "Rubbin Off The Paint," a catchy tune that sparked confusion among listeners who mistook its lyrics for "erasing paint from a wall." In fact, the song depicted a gangster removing the serial number from a gun. Nahmir utilized free beats from YouTube's catalog to create the track, but later acquired exclusive rights to prevent its theft and hired a producer to produce customized beats.
International Recognition
"Rubbin Off The Paint" exploded with over 5,000 views overnight, prompting Nahmir to create a music video that featured him walking through a mall with a bright pink backpack while his friends danced in the background. The intentionally ridiculous backpack became a symbol of their defiance and helped propel the video to millions of views in a matter of days. The song reached number 46 on the Billboard chart, earned Nahmir a spot on Rolling Stone's list of top ten new artists, and garnered a remix from Vince Staples.
Continued Success and Collaboration
Building on his newfound success, Nahmir released a series of singles, including "I Got a Stick," "No Hook," and "Ball Out." While they didn't reach the heights of "Rubbin Off The Paint," his track "Bounce Out With That" enjoyed similar popularity. In April 2018, Nahmir signed a contract with Atlantic Records, despite his previous reluctance to work with labels. YBN embarked on a European tour the following July, performing in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and Poland. They also toured the United States, visiting Atlanta, Cleveland, and Houston.
YBN: The Mixtape and Solo Projects
Later that year, Nahmir dropped the album "YBN: The Mixtape," which featured contributions from his crew as well as guest appearances from hip-hop luminaries like Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, and Cuban Doll. He also released solo mixtapes, "#YBN" and "Believe in the Gio."
International Expansion and YBN Disbandment
In 2019, Nahmir showcased his international appeal by collaborating with City Girls and Tyga on the singles "Baby 8" and "Fuck It Up." YBN performed at major festivals in Leeds and Reading, establishing a strong following in the United Kingdom. However, in September 2020, rumors surfaced that the collective had disbanded. The reasons for the split remain unknown.
YBN Nahmir Now
Despite the disbandment, Nahmir continues to pursue his music career. In March 2020, he released the music video for "2 Seater," featuring G-Eazy and Offset. The video displays the trio rapping surrounded by luxury cars and scantily clad women. Nahmir has also announced the release of his upcoming album, "Visionland," which will include previously released tracks like "Rubbin Off The Paint 2" and "Off Stoppa." The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced him to cancel live concerts for the time being.
