Biography of Tippi Hedren

Tippi Hedren is an American actress, best known for her roles in the films "The Birds" (1963) and "Marnie" (1964). She is the mother of actress Melanie Griffith and the grandmother of actress Dakota Johnson.

Early Life

Nathalie Kay Hedren was born on January 19, 1930, in New Ulm, Minnesota, to parents Dorothy Henrietta and Bernard Carl Hedren. Her paternal grandfather immigrated to the United States from Sweden, while her maternal ancestors were of German and Norwegian descent. She received the nickname "Tippi" from her father, who believed that the name Nathalie was too mature for a child.

Early Career

As a teenager, Tippi Hedren participated in fashion shows at clothing stores. Her family moved to California while she was still attending high school, and when she turned 18, she relocated to New York to pursue a modeling career. In 1950, she made her film debut in a small role in the musical comedy "The Petty Girl." Over the next decade, she found success in the modeling industry.

Breakthrough and Collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock

In 1963, Tippi Hedren caught the eye of Alfred Hitchcock during one of her appearances on a television show, leading to her casting as Melanie Daniels in his film "The Birds." This role earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best New Actress and her character, Melanie Daniels, was included in "Premiere" magazine's list of the 100 greatest movie characters of all time. She went on to star in Hitchcock's psychological thriller "Marnie" (1964) alongside Sean Connery. Despite Hitchcock's interest in casting her in future projects, Hedren declined further collaborations with him, which affected her career due to Hitchcock's influence in the film industry at the time.

Later Career

During the 1960s, Tippi Hedren appeared in few notable films. One of the few well-known movies she starred in during this period was Charlie Chaplin's "A Countess from Hong Kong" (1967), where she portrayed the character of Martha. In the 1970s, she worked sparingly in film, but in the early 1980s, she began to appear frequently on television, with roles in series such as "Hotel," "Tales from the Darkside," "Murder, She Wrote," "The Bold and the Beautiful," "The 4400," and others.

Personal Life

In 1952, Tippi Hedren married actor and producer Peter Griffith. They had a daughter together, Melanie Griffith, who also became an actress. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1961. In 1964, she married her agent, Noel Marshall, who went on to produce three films in which she starred. They divorced in 1982. Her third husband was businessman Luis Barrenechea, with whom she was in a relationship from 1985 to 1995. In 2002, Tippi Hedren married veterinarian Dr. Martin Dinnes.
