Tiririca: From Circus Clown to Brazilian Congressman
Early Life and CareerIn 1965, Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva (known as Tiririca) was born into extreme poverty in Itapipoca, Ceará. By age 6, he began working and joined a circus troupe at 8. There, he adopted the stage name "Tiririca," given to him by his mother.
Rise to Stardom
Tiririca's comedy and humor made him a beloved figure in the circus. He later released a successful musical album that sold over 1.5 million copies. His subsequent albums, "Tiririca" (1997) and "Dança da Rapadura" (1999), also achieved success.
Transition to Television
As his music career waned, Tiririca moved into television, hosting a children's show. He gained immense popularity as a comedian and released another album in 2004, "Alegria do Forró," which failed commercially.
Political Aspirations
In a surprising move, Tiririca announced his candidacy for the National Congress in 2010, running for the Brazilian Republican Party. His campaign slogans, such as "It can't get any worse," raised eyebrows. Despite being ridiculed and not taken seriously, he was elected as a congressman.
Congressional Career
Tiririca won a seat in the Chamber of Deputies from São Paulo with 1,348,295 votes, becoming the most voted-for candidate. He became the second-most voted-for Brazilian candidate in history. Despite initial objections over his literacy, Tiririca passed a special test, qualifying him for office.
Controversies and Achievements
On his first day in Parliament, Tiririca ironically commented on the increase in salaries for deputies. He later became known for his diligence, attending sessions and criticizing fellow congressmen whom he perceived as indolent.
