Tobias Hegewald
Tobias Hegewald is a German racing driver who has competed in various racing series throughout his career. Born on January 17, 1981, he began his racing journey in the ICA Junior level, where he competed against future Formula 3 Euroseries drivers Alexander Sims, Jean-Karl Vernay, Stefano Coletti, and Jules Bianchi, as well as current Formula 1 driver Sebastien Buemi.
Early Career
In 2005, Hegewald transitioned to open-wheel racing, participating in the Formula BMW ADAC and Formula BMW USA series. He finished 20th in the German championship with six points and 15th in the American series, earning 22 points and two pole positions, including a support race at the 2005 Canadian Grand Prix.
In 2006, Hegewald showed improvement in the German series, finishing 13th in the ADAC series and earning 29 points in 18 races. He also competed in four rounds of the American series, accumulating 23 points and finishing 14th overall.
Formula Renault 2.0
Following his success in previous series, Hegewald signed a contract with a team based at the Motorsport Arena in Oschersleben to compete in the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 and the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. While he faced challenges in the Eurocup, he was able to contend for the NEC title against Frank Kechele, ultimately finishing second by 79 points. Hegewald secured three victories and ten podium finishes during the season.
In 2008, Hegewald continued his participation in two championships after the team was renamed Motopark Academy. He aimed to secure at least one title but faced tough competition. While his results improved in the Eurocup, finishing fifth overall, his teammate Valtteri Bottas surpassed him to claim the championship in a battle against Daniel Ricciardo. In the NEC series, Hegewald won only one race out of 14 and secured third place in the championship.
Formula 2 and Beyond
In 2009, Hegewald participated in the second round of the World Series by Renault, replacing Mihai Marinescu in the Interwetten team. This opportunity arose earlier than planned due to his involvement in the Formula Palmer Audi test series. Hegewald then signed a contract to compete in the revived FIA Formula 2 series in 2009, racing with the number 8 on his car.
