Biography of Toby Alderweireld
Toby Alderweireld is a Belgian footballer who plays as a central defender for Dutch club Ajax and the Belgian national team. He began his football career in the youth team of Belgian club Germinal Beerschot.
In 2004, Alderweireld transferred to Ajax in Amsterdam, where he joined fellow Belgian players Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen, and Tom De Mul, who had also previously played for Germinal Beerschot's youth team. Alderweireld initially played for Ajax's youth team until the 2007/2008 season, when he was promoted to the first team by head coach Marco van Basten.
Alderweireld made his debut for Ajax on January 18, 2009, in a match against NEC. He came on as a substitute in the second half, replacing forward Miralem Sulejmani. Ajax emerged victorious with a score of 2-4. Later that season, Alderweireld made his debut in the UEFA Cup against Italian club Fiorentina.
On May 22, 2009, Alderweireld extended his contract with Ajax until June 30, 2014. In the same month, he was also called up to the Belgian national team by head coach Rene Vandereycken to participate in the Kirin Cup in Japan. Alderweireld made his debut for Belgium on May 29, 2009, in a match against Chile.
Despite a promising start to his career, Alderweireld's first season in the Dutch league saw him play only five matches, with Ajax finishing in third place. However, his performances caught the attention of fans and scouts alike, leading to his contract extension.
