Early Life and Education

Born in Elstead, Surrey, to Tristian and Marina Roberts, Joe Roberts attended Edgeborough School, a co-educational preparatory school in Frensham, where he discovered his passion for climbing in 2013. He then enrolled at King Edward's School, a boarding and day school in Witley, Surrey.

Climbing Career

In 2015, aged ten, Roberts became the youngest Briton to redpoint the 8a (5.13b) route Raindogs in Malham Cove, North Yorkshire. Five years later, at the age of 15, he made history as the youngest ever British climber to complete a 9a (5.14d) route, redpointing Rainshadow by Steve McClure, also in Malham Cove. In 2021, Roberts joined an elite group of climbers by redpointing Ben Moon's iconic 8c+ (5.14c) route Hubble at Raven Tor.

Competition Climbing

In June 2023, Roberts claimed his first gold medal in a senior-level competition, winning the bouldering discipline. In October, he became the first British male climber (and second British climber after Shauna Coxsey) to qualify for the Olympics, securing his place at the 2024 Paris Games by triumphing at the European Olympic Qualifier in Laval, France. Roberts culminated his meteoric rise by winning the combined bouldering and lead event in Paris, taking home the Olympic gold medal.
