Torghul Shakhtinski: A Pioneer in Petrochemistry

Early Life and Education

Toghrul Ne'mat oglu Shakhtinski was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, on October 22, 1925. He graduated from the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute in 1949 with a degree in chemical technology.

Career and Research

Institute Appointments and Academic Work

- 1949-1959: Institute of Oil, Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR

- 1960-1974: Institute of Petrochemical Processes, Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR

- 1975-Present: Director, Institute of Theoretical Problems of Chemical Technology, Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR

- 1959-1968: Lecturer, Institute of Oil and Chemistry

Significant Contributions to Petrochemistry

Dr. Shakhtinski's research focused on oxidation and oxidative ammonolysis of hydrocarbons, as well as the theoretical foundations of chemical technology. He made significant contributions in the following areas:

- Developed a process for liquid-phase oxidative ammonolysis of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons

- Established the theory, principles, and methodology for modeling and optimizing the control of industrial processes with changing catalyst activity in systems with pseudo-settled and stationary catalyst layers

- Synthesized maleic anhydride by direct oxidation of n-butenes and n-butane

- Produced vinyl chloride by conjugated dehydrochlorination of dichloroethane and hydrochlorination of acetylene

- Synthesized acrylonitrile by oxidative ammonolysis of propane
