Tom Baker was born in Liverpool on January 20, 1957, into a seafaring family. His father was rarely at home, so the majority of his upbringing was taken care of by his mother. The upbringing was strict and Catholic. At the age of fifteen, Baker left school and spent six years preparing for a future monastic life on the island of Jersey. However, after the preparatory period, Tom realized that being a monk was not meant for him. He left the monastic life and joined the medical corps for national service.
