In 1961, Hayden married Casey, an equally active activist who worked in the coordinating committee of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. Together, they formed a formidable and dynamic duo. From 1964 to 1968, Hayden actively worked for the rights of impoverished residents and represented the national community Newark Community Union Project.

Tom Hayden was frequently arrested for his fearless protests and demonstrations. He was charged with incitement and was often labeled as the instigator of various riots. Furthermore, Hayden made numerous trips abroad to countries like Cambodia and Vietnam, where he conducted peace actions and protested against American intervention.

During one of these trips, Hayden met the famous Jane Fonda, who would later become his second wife. In 1976, Hayden campaigned against the incumbent California senator and, along with Jane Fonda, supported other political candidates aligned with his progressive views.

From 1982 to 1992, Hayden served in the California State Assembly, and from 1992 to 2000, he served in the State Senate. Currently, Hayden remains an active figure, serving as a member of the advisory board of Progressive Democrats – a influential organization comprised of representatives from the "broad masses" and dedicated to expanding progressive political cooperation within the Democratic Party.
