Early Life and Education
Born in Moscow on April 1, 1953, Russian political figure Alexei Mitrofanov is the product of a physician family. He graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute's Faculty of Radio Electronics for Aircraft in 1977, specializing in radio engineering. In 1995, he obtained a degree from Harvard Kennedy School's School of Management.
Early Career
From 1977 to 1979, Mitrofanov worked as an engineer at the State Scientific Research Institute of Civil Aviation. He focused on ergonomics and engineering psychology. Subsequently, he served in the Soviet Army as an officer in the Main Directorate of Cosmonautics from 1979 to 1981. Between 1981 and 1987, he conducted research in closed environments within military-industrial complex institutions. During this period, he graduated from the Institute of Marxism-Leninism.
Political Beginnings
Mitrofanov's political career began in 1987 with his appointment as Head of the Political Department for the State Committee of the USSR for Computing Technology and Informatics. From 1991 to 1993, he served as Deputy Director of the All-Russian Intersectoral Scientific and Educational Center for Computing Technology and Informatics.
Liberal Democratic Party
In early 1992, Mitrofanov joined the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) under the leadership of Vladimir Zhirinovsky. He rose through the ranks, becoming a member of the LDPR's Supreme Council and First Deputy Chairman from April 1994 to March 1996. As head of the party's intelligence service in their shadow cabinet, Mitrofanov was considered the second most powerful figure in the LDPR.
State Duma Elections
Mitrofanov was elected to the State Duma on December 12, 1993, as part of the LDPR list. In January 1994, he became Deputy Chairman of the Duma, representing the LDPR faction and overseeing the Duma's scientific connections. He was reelected to the State Duma in 1995 and served on the Committee for International Affairs.
National Democratic Vanguard
In February 1996, Mitrofanov founded his own public organization, the National Democratic Vanguard (NDA) fund. In March 1996, he stepped down from the LDPR leadership and was expelled from the party and its Duma faction in July 1996.
Democratic Vanguard
Based on the NDA fund, Mitrofanov established the Democratic Vanguard party, serving as its Chairman. The party's founding congress was held on July 26, 1996.
Later Political Endeavors
In October 1999, Mitrofanov helped create the public support center for independent candidates in the State Duma elections. He ran as an independent candidate in the 1999 State Duma elections but was unsuccessful.
Family and Personal Life
Mitrofanov is married to Nina Ivanovna, a radio engineer at the Central Science Film Studio. They have two children, Valeria (born 1977) and Vladislav (born 1986).
