Biography of Thomas Hogstedt
Thomas Hogstedt is a Swedish tennis coach and former professional player. He has worked as a personal trainer for Maria Sharapova, the former world No. 3. Throughout his career, Hogstedt has coached several top players, including Tommy Haas, Magnus Norman, Eugenie Bouchard, Caroline Wozniacki, Li Na, Simona Halep, Madison Keys, and Johanna Konta.
Playing Career
Hogstedt began his tennis journey as a junior player and achieved success early on. In 1981, he won the junior singles title at the US Open, defeating West German player Hans Schwaier in the final. The following year, he secured a victory over tennis star Mats Wilander in Cincinnati and reached the semifinals in Basel and Båstad. In 1983, Hogstedt emerged as the champion at the Grand Prix Tournament in Ferrara, Italy, winning the title without dropping a single set. He also reached the quarterfinals in Milan that same year.
In both 1987 and 1988, Hogstedt had notable performances at the OTB Open in New York, reaching the semifinals. His career highlight came in 1989 when he won the Wimbledon Championships, defeating Jacob Hlasek, who was ranked sixth in the world at the time, in the first round. He also reached the quarterfinals at the Rio de Janeiro Open and the Australian Open.
In 1990, Hogstedt participated in all four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time in his career but failed to advance past the first round in any of them. His best results on the tour came in Rotterdam, Singapore, and Tokyo, where he reached the quarterfinals. In Tokyo, he defeated the sixth-ranked player in the world, Andres Gomez, for the second time in two encounters, having previously defeated the Ecuadorian in Basel in 1982.
Coaching Career
At the end of 2010, Hogstedt was appointed as the coach of Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam tournament winner. Prior to coaching Sharapova, he had achieved success with Tommy Haas and Li Na, both of whom were ranked in the top ten under his guidance. However, the partnership between Hogstedt and Sharapova ended shortly after her second-round defeat to Michelle Larcher de Brito at Wimbledon in 2013.
Hogstedt went on to coach Eugenie Bouchard from December 2016 to September 2017, having also worked with her from October 2015 to April 2016. He also served as the coach of American player Madison Keys from May to December 2016. Starting from the 2018 clay court season, Hogstedt resumed his coaching role with Maria Sharapova. In 2020, he also provided coaching on a trial basis to Elena Ostapenko.
