Early Life
Tomás Luis de Victoria was born around 1548 in Ávila, Spain. From the age of ten to eighteen, he served as a choirboy in the Ávila Cathedral.
Education in Rome
In 1567, Victoria was sent to the Collegium Germanicum in Rome to study theology. There, he became a cantor and organist at the Church of Santa Maria de Montserrat. Some speculate that he studied under Palestrina at the Roman Seminary. In 1571, he succeeded Palestrina as master of the seminary chapel.
Musical Career
In 1572, Victoria published his first book of motets in Venice. He was ordained a priest in 1575 and became the priest of the Church of Santo Tomás de los Ingleses. In 1578, he joined the Oratorian Confederation.
Return to Spain
Victoria returned to Spain in 1586. He was appointed personal chaplain to Empress Maria of Spain, widow of Emperor Maximilian II, and organist to the Discalced monastery in Madrid.
Later Life
In 1592, Victoria briefly returned to Rome to attend Palestrina's funeral. He permanently returned to Spain in 1595. Despite offers of prestigious positions in cathedrals throughout the country, Victoria declined, indicating his desire for solitude. Upon the empress's death in 1603, he composed his most famous work, the Requiem Officium Defunctorum. After her passing, Victoria remained a simple organist and died relatively unknown in 1611.
Musical Innovations
Victoria composed exclusively sacred music, including 20 masses, 46 motets, 35 hymns, and other spiritual works. He was the first to use accompaniment (organ, strings, or winds) in Spanish church music and also pioneered multi-choir works in the Venetian style.
Legacy
Victoria's music was widely admired in Italy, Spain, and Latin America during his lifetime. His наследие was championed by Felipe Pedrell in the 20th century and highly regarded by Manuel de Falla and Igor Stravinsky. Today, his compositions continue to be performed and recorded by renowned artists worldwide. The music conservatory in his hometown of Ávila bears his name.
