Early Life and Career
Tommy LiPuma was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1936. From an early age, he showed interest in music, learning to play the saxophone. However, he soon found himself working for a record label, scouting new artists.
Rise to Prominence
LiPuma began producing records in the late 1960s and quickly gained national recognition. He had an uncanny ability to identify potential stars, which served him well throughout his career. His work with legendary performers Nat King Cole and his daughter, Natalie Cole, brought him the greatest fame. He even won a Grammy Award for their duet, "Unforgettable."
Award-Winning Collaborations
Over the course of his long career, the producer collaborated with artists such as the Yellowjackets, The Story, Michael Franks, and Diana Krall. He received over 30 Grammy nominations and won the award three times.
Verve Records and Studio Focus
In 1994, LiPuma became co-chairman of the American record label Verve Records. Soon after, he announced his decision to spend more time in the studio to achieve the highest possible recording quality.
Diana Krall's Rise to Stardom
One of LiPuma's most successful projects was with Canadian pianist and vocalist Diana Krall. After the release of her debut album, "All For You," in 1996, it became clear that she had a bright future ahead of her. She went on to win numerous awards, including a Grammy Award in 2002 for her album "Live in Paris."
Art Connoisseur and Legacy
Beyond his musical endeavors, Tommy LiPuma is an avid art collector. His collection of 20th-century American paintings is considered one of the finest in the country. As LiPuma himself said, he has always operated on one guiding principle: "Find the best talent and make the best recordings."
