Early Life and Education
Naoya Matsuhita, born on August 1, 2005, in Utsunomiya, Japan, began his swimming journey at the tender age of one. Growing up, he attended Yokokawa Nishi Elementary School and Yonane Junior High School. He later enrolled at Tochigi Prefectural Minami High School in Tochigi, where he nurtured his swimming skills further.
Club and University Career
Matsuhita honed his talent at a swimming club in Utsunomiya. Subsequently, he joined Toyo University, where he trained under renowned coach Norimasa Hirai—the mentor behind Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Hagino, one of Matsuhita's idols.
International Success
In 2022, Matsuhita made his mark on the international stage at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, claiming four medals, including silver in the 200m individual medley and bronze in the 100m individual medley. Later that year, he added a silver medal to his collection at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in the 200m individual medley.
Olympic Breakthrough
Matsuhita's exceptional form culminated in his selection for the 2023 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. There, he ascended to the top of the podium in the 400m individual medley, shattering the championship record with a time of 4:10.97.
2024 Olympic Games
In March 2024, Matsuhita became the first Japanese swimmer to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Competing in the 400m individual medley at the Japanese Olympic Trials, he bested former Olympic medalists Tomoru Honda and Daiya Seto.
At the Olympics, Matsuhita became the youngest competitor in the event but defied expectations, reaching the final and securing a silver medal. He finished behind only France's Leon Marchand and became the youngest medalist in the 400m individual medley since 1972.
