Biography of Toni Kukoč
Early Life and CareerToni Kukoč is a former Yugoslavian and Croatian basketball player who primarily played as a small forward, but was also effective as a power forward. He was one of the first Europeans to achieve significant success in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Kukoč won three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and three Euroleague titles with BC Split. He represented the national basketball teams of Yugoslavia and Croatia.
Kukoč was born and raised in the Croatian city of Split. It was there that he began playing basketball, and in 1987, he started his professional career with the local team, Yugoplastika (now BC Split). In the late 1980s, Kukoč and Dino Rađa became the leaders of the team, which won four consecutive Yugoslavian championships and three consecutive Euroleague titles.
In 1988, Kukoč won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul as part of the Yugoslavian national team, which was one of the strongest national teams in the world at that time. The success of the Yugoslavian national team attracted interest from NBA teams, as foreign players had not previously achieved much success in the league. In the 1989 NBA draft, Dražen Petrović, Vlade Divac, and Dino Rađa were selected, and a year later, Kukoč was chosen by the Chicago Bulls with the 29th overall pick, a team that had not yet won an NBA championship and did not have much international recognition.
Instead of immediately moving to the United States after the draft, Kukoč continued to play in Europe. In 1990, he won the FIBA World Championship with the Yugoslavian national team, where he was named the Most Valuable Player. He also won European championships with the Yugoslavian national team in 1989 and 1991. In 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, Kukoč moved to Italy, where he played two seasons for Benetton Treviso, winning the Italian championship and cup, and reaching the Euroleague final in 1993.
Chicago Bulls
In 1993, Kukoč finally joined the Chicago Bulls. The team had won three consecutive NBA championships from 1991 to 1993 but lost its best player, Michael Jordan, who decided to retire from basketball. Kukoč began his first season with the Bulls as a reserve player, filling in for small forward Scottie Pippen and power forward Horace Grant. However, due to his versatility, Kukoč also played as a center and shooting guard. At the end of his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
In the following season, with Grant leaving the team, Kukoč earned a spot in the starting lineup and was the second-leading scorer, rebounder, and passer on the team, behind Pippen. In the 1995/1996 season, Jordan returned to Chicago, and the Bulls acquired Dennis Rodman, a standout defensive player and rebounding specialist. As a result, Kukoč returned to being a bench player, but coach Phil Jackson gave him significant playing time. Kukoč finished third in the team in scoring, behind Jordan and Pippen, and in 1996, he was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year.
From 1996 to 1998, the Bulls won three consecutive NBA championships, and Kukoč played a crucial role in the team's success. In 1998, after winning their third straight title, Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, and coach Phil Jackson left the Bulls. Kukoč remained one of the few remaining players from the championship-winning team and became the team's main star. In the shortened 1998/1999 season due to a lockout, he led the Bulls in points, rebounds, and assists.
Later Career and Retirement
In the middle of the 1999/2000 season, the rebuilding Bulls traded Kukoč to the Philadelphia 76ers. After a year, he found himself with the Atlanta Hawks, and a year and a half later, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks. He played for the Bucks for four seasons. In 2006, Toni Kukoč retired from basketball and settled in Highland Park, Illinois.
