Australian Designer from Melbourne

Early Passion for Fashion

At the young age of four, Toni began creating his first clothing sketches and soon started making his "debut" designs out of old curtains given to him by his mother. However, this passion for fashion took a backseat to typical childhood joys and games for a while.

Education and Early Career

After completing school, Maticevski enrolled in the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), where he studied textile design and experimented boldly with fabrics and sketches. He admits that he doesn't know where his love for fashion came from, as nobody in his family had ever been involved in the fashion industry.

International Recognition

After graduating with honors, Maticevski won the Fashion Group International Award, which gave him the opportunity to work with Donna Karan in New York City. However, he shocked everyone by declining a permanent position, believing that the fashion house had lost its spark. Instead, he went to Paris to work at the fashion house 'Cerruti' for two seasons.

Establishing His Own Brand

In 1998, Toni returned to Melbourne to establish his own fashion label, 'Toni Maticevski'. The following year, he won the title of 'Designer of the Year' at the L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival for his debut demi-couture collection inspired by the 1950s. Initially, he worked alone, designing, selecting fabrics, cutting, sewing, embroidering, and creating accessories. The $10,000 prize money was a welcome boost to his business aspirations.

Continued Success

In 2002, Maticevski showcased his spring and summer collections at the Australian Fashion Week sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. In 2005, he shared the award for 'Best New Designer' from Marie Claire magazine with designer Kit Willow. Maticevski approaches his collections with emotional intensity, rejecting long-standing norms, resulting in elegant dresses held together by complex systems of silk ribbons. Each season, he recreates his models in various styles and materials while maintaining a cohesive silhouette.

Celebrities and Recent Achievements

His brand recently launched a men's clothing line, featuring neutral-toned jackets and trousers. Maticevski's most recent collection that garnered widespread attention was the spring-summer 2010 pret-a-porter collection. These dresses, crafted from delicate pastel beige fabrics combined with black and gold, epitomized femininity. Inspired by the jazz era of the 1920s, the dresses featured hand embroidery, geometric cuts, intricate draping, and unusual texture combinations, making them works of art coveted by women worldwide. It's no wonder that many celebrities, including Sheryl Crow, Abbie Cornish, and Kim Kardashian, are counted among his clientele.

Despite some criticism of his fall 2010 collection, which featured layered dresses in tulle, silk, organza, and chiffon with lavish gold and silver embellishments, Maticevski's designs continue to attract the attention of young Hollywood stars, promising ongoing success in the fashion industry.
