Wartime Childhood and Career Beginnings

During the Second World War, Hechter left Paris with his mother at the outbreak of the war. After the war, he briefly served in the French army and commenced his fashion career as a warehouseman in a fashion house. In 1955, his talent was recognized by renowned designers Louis Féraud and Jacques Esterel, who purchased his designs.

The Birth of Prêt-à-Porter

In 1962, Hechter founded the 'Daniel Hechter Company' alongside his friend Armand Ornstein. Aiming to provide accessible, high-quality, and stylish clothing for the masses, Hechter is widely credited with inventing prêt-à-porter fashion, bringing it to the streets.

International Expansion and Diversification

As his company grew, Hechter expanded his collections to include children's wear, menswear, accessories, and even a perfume line. His brand became a global phenomenon, with seven distinct collections.

Football Career and Political Involvement

Beyond fashion, Hechter also played a significant role in the world of football. He was a major financial supporter and chairman of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in its early years, leaving a lasting impression despite his departure in 1978. In 1992, Hechter entered politics as a member of the regional council of Marseilles.

Retirement and Later Years

In 1997, Hechter retired from his fashion empire and relocated to Geneva, Switzerland. He published his autobiography, 'Le Boss,' in 2000. Despite his retirement, Hechter remained active, serving as vice-president of the Etoile-Carouge football club.
