Biography of Tony Bennett
Tony Bennett, born on August 3, 1926, in the United States, is a popular American singer known for his music in the pop and jazz genres. His real name is Anthony Benedetto and he was born in the Queens district of New York. His parents, Ann and John Benedetto, worked in a local grocery store and a small weaving factory, respectively. Tony's father, Tommy, had immigrated from the small Italian town of Reggio Calabria. Due to his father's frequent illness, the family lived in poverty, and when Tony was 10 years old, his father passed away, leaving him and his two brothers to provide for themselves.
As a child, Tony grew up listening to the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Eddie Cantor, Judy Garland, and Bing Crosby. He also admired the compositions of great jazz improvisers such as Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, and Joe Venuti. Tony's uncle, who worked as a tap dancer in vaudeville, suggested that he pursue a career in show business. At the age of 10, Tony began singing in local bars, and he even had the opportunity to perform at the opening of the "Triborough" bridge.
In addition to his excellent voice, Tony Bennett also possesses a talent for art. He is skilled at drawing various caricatures and still life paintings. Tony received his education at the School of Industrial Design in New York, where he studied painting and music. However, at the age of 16, he had to leave his studies to start earning money for his family. He found a job as a singing waiter in an Italian restaurant.
His singing career was interrupted in 1944 when Tony was drafted into the US Army. He served in the infantry during World War II in France and Germany. Bennett held pacifist views, so he tried to stay away from bloody battles and joined the military orchestra, where his talents were recognized. In 1946, he returned home from the army and immediately enrolled in a theater school, where he actively studied singing techniques and dedicated himself to improving his voice.
Breakthrough Success
Tony Bennett experienced his first major success in 1951 with his ballad "Because of You," which topped the American charts. Following this composition, many of Tony's songs instantly became hits.
