Early Life and Education

Tony Ferguson Jr. is an American professional mixed martial artist who was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on May 12, 1984. His Mexican heritage comes from his father, while he inherited his last name from his stepfather, a Scottish-American. Ferguson's upbringing in the small Midwestern town instilled in him a love for sports from a young age.

After graduating from high school, Ferguson attended Central Michigan University before transferring to Grand Valley State University. He also pursued courses at Muskegon Community College. Despite not completing his education, Ferguson established a successful wrestling career, winning two NCAA Division I national championships in the 150-pound and 165-pound weight classes in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Return to California and MMA Career

Ferguson returned to California to be closer to his extended family. He worked in marketing and sales during the day and bartended at night. During one of his bartending shifts, he connected with a wrestling acquaintance who offered him an opportunity to teach wrestling to young MMA fighters. Shortly after, Tony decided to embark on his own MMA career.

The Ultimate Fighter

In 2011, Ferguson signed with the UFC to participate in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos. He entered the competition as Team Lesnar's third overall pick and fifth overall. Ferguson initially faced Justin Edwards, who briefly knocked him down but was quickly defeated by Ferguson's signature D'Arce choke in the first round.

In the quarterfinals, Ferguson swiftly dispatched Ryan McGillivray via uppercut. During the post-fight festivities, he engaged in a bizarre altercation with Chuck O'Neil, who had playfully splashed him with water. Ferguson taunted O'Neil, who was going through a custody battle at the time. Ferguson advanced to the finale, where he defeated Ramsey Nijem.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

On December 4, 2011, Ferguson made his official UFC debut against Nijem at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. He emerged victorious via first-round knockout, securing the Ultimate Fighter 13 title and a "Knockout of the Night" bonus.

Ferguson returned to lightweight and faced Aaron Riley on September 24, 2011, at UFC 135. He dominated the first round and forced Riley to retire due to a broken jaw, earning a technical knockout victory. Ferguson then defeated MMA veteran Yves Edwards in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 14.

Ferguson faced Michael Johnson on May 5, 2012, at UFC on Fox: Diaz vs. Miller. However, Johnson handed him his first UFC loss via unanimous decision.
