Early Life and Education

Tony Hsieh (born December 12, 1973) is an American internet entrepreneur and venture capitalist. Born in Illinois to Taiwanese immigrants, he grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. In 1995, he graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.

Early Entrepreneurial Pursuits

As a Harvard student, Hsieh opened the Quincy House Grille, a coffee shop on the ground floor of his dormitory. He later founded LinkExchange, a banner exchange network, and co-founded Venture Frogs, a venture capital firm with Alfred Lin.

Zappos and the Rise to Success

In 1999, Hsieh launched Zappos.com, an online shoe retailer. Under his leadership, Zappos became a highly successful e-commerce company known for its exceptional customer service. In 2009, Amazon acquired Zappos for $1.2 billion.

The Downtown Project

In 2012, Hsieh embarked on an ambitious project to revitalize downtown Las Vegas. With an initial investment of $350 million from his own fortune, he launched the Downtown Project, a multifaceted urban redevelopment initiative. The project aims to create a vibrant community with businesses, restaurants, entertainment venues, and residential spaces.

Progress and Challenges

Over the first 13 months, the Downtown Project launched 10 small businesses, including the Eat restaurant and the Coterie clothing store. However, the project also faced challenges, with dilapidated buildings still present on much of the 20 acres of land under Hsieh's control.

Vision and Inspiration

Hsieh believes that his efforts will ultimately transform downtown Las Vegas into a thriving urban hub without the need for major sports teams, stadiums, or prestigious educational institutions. He aims to demonstrate a model for urban development centered on collaboration and community engagement.

Headquarters and Investment Strategy

Hsieh currently resides in a 23rd-floor apartment in The Ogden, a luxury high-rise building downtown. His investment of $350 million in the Downtown Project is allocated as follows:

$100 million for real estate acquisition

$100 million for residential development
$50 million for small businesses
$50 million for education (charter school and Teach for America)
$50 million for technology startups through the VegasTech Fund
Global Impact and Legacy

Hsieh hopes that the Downtown Project will inspire other cities to prioritize urban renewal and community building. He believes that cities are the future and that by focusing on collaboration and innovation, they can become more livable, sustainable, and prosperous.
