Early Life and Education

David Karp grew up in Manhattan, New York City. His father, Michael D. Karp, was a composer for film and television, while his mother, Barbara Ackerman, was a teacher. He had a younger brother named Kevin. Karp attended his mother's school until 8th grade and then briefly attended Bronx Science. At the age of 15, he decided to pursue homeschooling and never returned to traditional school. He did not receive a formal high school diploma.

Early Career

Karp started learning HTML at the age of 11 and soon began developing websites for local businesses. At 14, he became an intern for Fred Seibert, the founder of Frederator Studios. Seibert noticed Karp's ability to engage in technical conversations despite his young age and recommended him to entrepreneur John Maloney. Karp quickly completed a two-day project in just four hours and was appointed as the head of a new startup project, earning a small stake in the company.

Tumblr and Entrepreneurial Success

While still working on UrbanBaby, Karp took a five-month trip to Tokyo at the age of 17, which went unnoticed by his colleagues for three months. In 2006, UrbanBaby was sold to CNET, and Karp left the company to start his own consulting group called 'Davidville'. Karp had been interested in microblogs, particularly 'tumblelogs', for a long time. When no major blog services launched similar platforms, he decided to create his own. The first version of Tumblr was created by Karp and Marco Arment in just two weeks during a break between contracts. The site gained over 75,000 users within two weeks of its launch and now hosts around 87 million blogs as of January 2013.

Personal Life and Wealth

Not much is known about David Karp's personal life. In September 2011, he was in a relationship with Rachel Eakley, a professional chef and certified psychologist. They were living in West Village at the time. Karp has managed his wealth wisely, and his net worth is estimated to be over $200 million. He owns a luxurious property in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which is sparsely furnished except for a well-equipped kitchen for his chef girlfriend.
