Birth and Early Life
Travis Scott, born Jacques Webster Jr., is an American trap musician and producer. He was born on April 30, 1992, in Missouri City, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Raised by his grandmother while his mother worked at Apple and his father pursued business ventures, Scott attended Texas State University in San Antonio and Texas A&M University in Austin.
Musical Beginnings (2009-2012)
At the age of 16, Scott began producing beats and collaborated with longtime friend Chris Holloway. In 2009, they released their debut EP on Myspace. In 2010, Scott formed a duo with rapper OG Chess, calling themselves The Classmates. The Classmates released two full-length projects: "Buddy Rich" and "Cruis'n USA," both produced by Scott. However, the duo disbanded in 2011 due to personal and financial conflicts.
Rise to Prominence (2012-2014)
After graduating college, Scott moved from Houston to Los Angeles. There, he crossed paths with Mike Waxx, who owned the hip-hop website Illroots. When rapper T.I. heard Scott's track "Lights (Love Sick)," he contacted him and invited him to collaborate in the studio. T.I. wrote a verse for Scott's song "Animal."
Scott's debut mixtape, "Owl Pharaoh," was initially scheduled for release in mid-2012. However, technical and artwork delays pushed the project back. In March 2013, he released two singles: "Blocka La Flame" and "Quintana." On April 2, 2013, he announced the release of "Owl Pharaoh" on iTunes.
In March 2014, Scott previewed a track with Big Sean at the South by Southwest festival, which was initially supposed to be titled "1975" and appear on his debut studio album. Scott later confirmed that the song would be included on his second mixtape, "Days Before Rodeo." The full version, titled "Don't Play," featuring Big Sean and The 1975, was released in May 2014. Scott also embarked on his first tour, The Rodeo Tour, with Young Thug and Metro Boomin.
Acclaimed Albums (2015-Present)
Scott's debut studio album, "Rodeo," was released on September 4, 2015. It featured guest appearances from Migos, Juicy J, Kanye West, and The Weeknd, among others. The album garnered critical acclaim and reached number three on the Billboard 200.
In August 2016, Scott revealed his second studio album, "Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight." He explained the title as a reflection of his upbringing and the social challenges faced by young people in his neighborhood. After several delays, the album was finally released on September 2, 2016, exclusively on Apple Music. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Scott announced his third studio album, "Astroworld," in May 2016, set for release in 2017.
Musical Style
Scott's music has been described by Spin magazine as similar to Kid Cudi's album "Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager." He credits Cudi, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, M.I.A., Toro y Moi, and T.I. as major influences on his sound.
