Trevor Joyce: Irish Poet Writing in English
Trevor Joyce is an Irish poet known for writing in English. He played an active role in Ireland's literary scene from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s.
Literary Career
In 1967, Joyce co-founded "New Writers' Press" and published his debut collection. In 1968, he edited the first edition of the almanac "The Lace Curtain." By 1976, five collections of Joyce's poetry had been published, including "The Poems of Sweeny Peregrine" (1976), a retelling of a medieval Irish tale.
Break from Literature and Return
Joyce stepped away from his literary career in the mid-1970s. He pursued teaching, specializing in philosophy, classical Chinese poetry, and mathematics at universities in Oxford, Dublin, and Cork, where he settled in 1984. After a two-decade-long hiatus, he released four more books of poetry beginning in 1995.
Poetry Revival and Recognition
In 1997, Joyce established and directed the International Poetry Festival in Cork. He became a nominee and recipient of various literary awards. In 2004, he was elected to the Irish academy of the arts, "Aosdána."
