Biography of Konrad Bayer
Konrad Bayer was an Austrian writer, playwright, and poet, and a member of the Vienna Group (Wiener Gruppe). He gained the most recognition for his works "Der Kopf Vitus Berings" (The Head of Vitus Bering) and "Der sechste Sinn" (The Sixth Sense). His prose was lyrical, which was typical of the Vienna Group style, but it was also considered innovative and experimental as it combined many incompatible elements: cruelty, alchemy, metaphysics, and pessimism.
Joining the Art-Club
In 1951, Konrad Bayer joined the society "Art-Club," the predecessor of the Vienna Group. He participated in literary readings alongside other writers, showcasing his unique literary experiment in the spirit of linguistic solipsism.
Tragic End and Posthumous Works
On October 10, 1964, Konrad Bayer tragically took his own life, putting an end to his unique literary experiment. After his death, his works were published as a separate edition with illustrations by Gunter Brus.
The Requiem and Opera
In 1968, German composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann wrote the poignant "Requiem for a Young Poet," dedicated to three poets who had taken their own lives: Vladimir Mayakovsky, Sergei Yesenin, and Konrad Bayer. Their poems formed the basis of the opera.
