Early Life and Rise to Fame

Born in Dallas, Texas, Trini Lopez spent his childhood on Ashland Street in the Little Mexico neighborhood. His breakout moment came with the 1963 hit "If I Had a Hammer," a cover of a pre-existing folk song. This rendition topped charts in 36 countries, cementing Lopez's status as an international star. Selling over a million copies, the single achieved gold certification.

Acting Career and Accolades

Lopez also established a notable acting career, appearing as part of the "Dirty Dozen" in the 1967 film of the same name. He also played a version of himself in the 1970 film "The Phynx." In 1993, Lopez was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. On May 15, 2008, his 71st birthday, he received a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars.
