Early Career and TSR

Denning joined TSR in 1981 as a game designer, rising to Design Manager within a year. He then moved to the company's book division. After two years with Pacesetter and Mayfair Games, Denning became a freelance writer.

Avatar Trilogy and Bestseller Success

In 1989, Denning penned the third novel in the Avatar Trilogy, titled "Waterdeep." Published under the pseudonym Richard Awlinson, the book became a New York Times bestseller. Denning also co-authored novels with Scott Ciencin.

Return to TSR and Dark Sun

In October 1989, Denning returned to TSR as Lead Game Designer. Collaborating with Tim Brown and Mary Kirchoff, he co-created the Dark Sun campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Denning explained that they sought to create a setting for advanced players, breaking away from the constraints of AD&D and allowing characters such as half-giants, mantis warriors, and heavily powerful heroes.

Legacy of Dark Sun

In 1998, Denning reflected on the impact of Dark Sun, stating that it had "done exactly what it set out to do - shake things up." He credited artist Gerald Brom's striking artwork for bringing the setting's landscapes, creatures, and terrifying monsters to life.

Freelancing and Notable Works

In 1991, Denning returned to freelancing and penned the Prism Pentad novel for Dark Sun and the Twilight Giants trilogy for Forgotten Realms. He also wrote "Pages of Pain" for the Planescape campaign, a narrative challenge as the main character, the Lady of Pain, rarely spoke. Denning described the experience as "a defining exercise" that pushed him to explore new writing approaches.

Star Wars Novels

Denning has also written several novels in the Star Wars universe. He penned books 3, 6, and 9 in the Legacy of the Force series, as well as the Dark Nest trilogy, three books in the Fate of the Jedi series, and the ninth book in The New Jedi Order: Star by Star.

Personal Life and Interests

Troy Denning currently resides in Wisconsin with his wife, Andria. He enjoys spending time outdoors and pursuing martial arts.
