Early Life and Education
John Gray Hare was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 12, 1878. As a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Hare pursued various athletic endeavors, including cricket, American football, golf, track and field, archery, and clay pigeon shooting.
Athletic Career
Olympic SuccessHare represented the United States in three throwing events at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. He placed eighth in shot put, failed to register a valid throw in discus, and achieved a remarkable second place in hammer throw, earning a silver medal with a distance of 46.26 meters.
Four years later, at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Hare competed in the decathlon. After initially leading the competition, he dropped to third place after the pole vault and maintained that position until the end, securing a bronze medal.
Post-Athletic Life
Following his athletic career, Hare transitioned into legal and artistic pursuits. His life was unexpectedly cut short when he passed away on February 2, 1956.
