Tuoomas Sammelvuo: A Legacy in Volleyball
Early Life and CareerTuoomas Sammelvuo was born in Pudasyarvi, Finland, and grew up playing volleyball with his siblings. At sixteen, he moved to Tampere to attend a sports school and joined the Finnish junior national team. In 1993, he signed his first professional contract with Raision Loimu and went on to win bronze in the Finnish championship.
International Success
Sammelvuo became a regular in the Finnish national team, captaining it for over a decade from 1997. He led the team to their highest achievement, a fourth-place finish at the 2007 European Championship. Overall, he played 296 matches for Finland, the second-most appearances behind Kari Kallinen.
Professional Club Career
Sammelvuo played for clubs in Finland, France, Italy, and Japan throughout his career. He won the Finnish championship twice with KuPS and the French championship with Stade Poitevin, as well as the Italian Cup with Perugia. In 2005, he became the first Finn to win the Volleyball Champions League with Tours.
Return to Finland and Coaching Career
Sammelvuo ended his playing career in 2012 with Lokomotiv Novosibirsk. Soon after, he became head coach of the Finnish national team, leading them to a ninth-place finish at the 2014 World Championship, their highest-ever ranking.
Success with Kuzbass
In 2016, Sammelvuo took over as head coach of Russian club Kuzbass while continuing to lead the Finnish team. Under his guidance, Kuzbass achieved their best-ever result, a fourth-place finish in 2018. In 2019, he guided them to their first-ever Russian championship title.
Coaching the Russian National Team
On March 1, 2019, Sammelvuo was appointed head coach of the Russian national team. He led the team to an eighth-place finish at the 2019 Volleyball World Cup and a second-place finish at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
