Formation and Early Years
Twenty One Pilots, an American musical duo, was formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. The group consists of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. After an initial lineup featuring Nick Thomas and Chris Salih departed in 2011, Joseph recruited Dun, the former drummer of House of Heroes.
The band's name was inspired by Arthur Miller's play "All My Sons," which tells the story of a businessman who knowingly sends defective airplane parts to the military during World War II, resulting in the deaths of 21 pilots. Joseph found the play's exploration of moral dilemmas compelling and believed it reflected their own challenges in navigating the music industry.
Regional at Best and Fueled by Ramen
In 2011, Twenty One Pilots released their second album, "Regional at Best," featuring Joseph and Dun as a duo. Its success attracted the attention of several record labels, and the band ultimately signed with Fueled by Ramen, an imprint of Atlantic Records.
Vessel and Mainstream Breakthrough
In 2013, the band released their debut EP, "Three Songs," and their first full-length album, "Vessel." The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 58 and spawned the singles "Holding On To You," "Guns For Hands," and "Lovely." The band embarked on a successful tour with Fall Out Boy, further raising their profile.
Blurryface and First Grammy Award
In 2015, Twenty One Pilots released their third studio album, "Blurryface." The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell over 134,000 copies in its first week. The singles "Fairly Local," "Tear in My Heart," and "Stressed Out" became major hits, solidifying the band's mainstream success.
In 2017, "Stressed Out" earned the band a Grammy Award for "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance."
EMØTIØNAL RØADSHØW WØRLD TØUR and New Album
After their Blurryface World Tour concluded in 2015, Twenty One Pilots embarked on the EMØTIØNAL RØADSHØW WØRLD TØUR in 2016, which included 107 shows. The tour featured updated setlists, covers of other songs, and a transformed stage design and show concept.
In 2018, the band hinted at their return with a series of cryptic messages and social media profile updates. They released two new singles, "Jumpsuit" and "Nico and the Niners," and announced their fifth studio album, "Trench," which was released later that year. The album embarked on a new tour, THE BANDITO TOUR, which included two shows in Russia.
