TWICE: A Phenomenal K-Pop Girl Group
Formation and DebutTWICE, stylized as TWICE, is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2015 reality show "Sixteen." The group consists of nine members: Jihyo (leader), Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. They made their official debut on October 20, 2015, with the mini-album "The Story Begins."
Early Success and Breakthrough
TWICE's popularity skyrocketed in spring 2016 with the release of the single "Cheer Up." The single debuted at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, becoming the most successful song by any group released that year. The song won "Song of the Year" at two major music awards: Mnet Asian Music Awards and Melon Music Awards. Their subsequent single "TT" from their third mini-album "TWICEcoaster: Lane 1" stayed at the top of the chart for four consecutive weeks. The album also became the best-selling album of the year by a female Korean group (with over 350,000 copies sold by the end of the year). In less than 19 months after their debut, TWICE had sold over 1.2 million albums in South Korea.
Japanese Debut and International Recognition
On June 28, 2017, TWICE made their official debut in Japan under Warner Music Japan with the compilation album "#TWICE." The album debuted at number two on the Oricon Albums Chart, selling over 136,157 copies in less than a week, marking the highest first-week sales for a Korean artist in Japan in over two years. Their first original Japanese single, "One More Time," was released on October 18. With over 250,000 copies sold, TWICE became the first Korean girl group to receive platinum certification from the RIAJ for both a CD single and an album in the same calendar year. In Billboard Japan's year-end rankings for 2017, the group ranked third on the list of top artists.
As of March 2019, TWICE's cumulative sales on Gaon and Oricon charts exceeded 5 million copies, making them the best-selling Korean girl group. After the release of their seventh mini-album "Fancy You," TWICE became the best-selling Korean girl group of all time with over 3.75 million copies sold, breaking a record held by S.E.S. for twenty-one years.
Name and Concept
The group's name, TWICE, was coined by JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin Young. He explained, "The group will touch people's hearts twice, once through the ears and once through the eyes."
