Ulrich Biesinger: The World Cup Champion Striker
Ulrich Biesinger was a German footballer who played as a centre forward for the West German national team and FC Augsburg, where he won the 1954 FIFA World Cup.
Early Career
Biesinger made his professional debut for FC Augsburg on August 24, 1952, against VfB Stuttgart. The 19-year-old scored 13 goals in 30 appearances during his first season. In 1959, Augsburg was relegated to the second division, prompting Biesinger to join FC Reutlingen in 1960. He scored 44 goals in 78 appearances for Reutlingen in the Oberliga Süd, becoming the third-highest goalscorer in the league's history.
Bundesliga and Injuries
With the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963, Biesinger returned to FC Augsburg. He spent two more seasons with the team but was plagued by injuries. In 1965, he moved to another Augsburg club, TSV Schwaben. After six appearances in the first half of the season, Biesinger suffered a severe meniscus injury in October. He made an unsuccessful attempt to return on March 6, 1966, in a home game against Bayern München. His last appearance was on October 14, 1966, against VfR Mannheim.
International Career
Biesinger played for the West German U23 team from 1953 to 1959. His impressive performances caught the attention of national team manager Sepp Herberger, who included Biesinger in the squad for the 1954 World Cup. Despite being the youngest player on the team at 20, he did not play in any matches but won the World Cup with West Germany.
He made his debut for the senior national team in September 1954 against Belgium. Biesinger scored two goals for West Germany in 1956 and was a candidate for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden but was not selected. His last international appearance was against Egypt in Cairo on December 28, 1958.
Post-Playing Career
After retiring from playing, Biesinger worked as a coach for several amateur teams in Augsburg. He also engaged in charity work, participating in veteran football matches.
