Early Life and Career

Ulrich von Brockdorff-Rantzau was born into an aristocratic family in Germany. He studied law at the universities of Neuchâtel and Freiburg. In 1891, he served in the Prussian army before beginning his diplomatic career in 1894 in Brussels. He subsequently served in Vienna and Budapest.

Diplomatic Service

From 1912 until the outbreak of World War I, Brockdorff-Rantzau served as envoy to Denmark. After Germany's defeat in the war, he accepted the post of State Secretary (later Reich Minister of Foreign Affairs) in the Weimar Republic government of Philipp Scheidemann.

Rejection of Versailles Treaty

Brockdorff-Rantzau famously refused to sign the Treaty of Versailles, which he considered a betrayal of Germany. He resigned from his position in June 1919 in protest.

Ambassador to the Soviet Union

In 1922, Brockdorff-Rantzau became Germany's ambassador to the Soviet Union. He sought to establish good relations between the two countries while avoiding close military cooperation.

Diplomacy and Legacy

Brockdorff-Rantzau played a key role in the signing of the Treaty of Neutrality and Non-Aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union in 1926. He died suddenly during a visit to Berlin.

Cinematographic Portrayal

Brockdorff-Rantzau was portrayed by Thomas Unger in the 2017 television series "The Demon of Revolution."
