Early Life and Education

Ulrich Seidl was born in Horn, Lower Austria, to devout Catholic parents who both worked as doctors. As a youth, he initially aspired to become a priest.

Documentary Beginnings

Seidl's filmmaking journey began with several documentaries, including "Good News," "Models," and "Animal Love." These works explored diverse themes, capturing the realities of news production, the lives of fashion models, and the human-animal bond.

Transition to Feature Films

In 2001, Seidl's feature film debut, "Dog Days," premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the festival's Grand Prix. With its unflinching portrayal of everyday life, the film established Seidl's unique style.

In 2003, Seidl founded his own film company, Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion GmbH, which produced his subsequent works. Among them was "Import Export" (2007), which was screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Paradise Trilogy

From 2012 to 2013, Seidl released his acclaimed "Paradise" trilogy. The three films centered around three Austrian women's experiences during their vacations. "Paradise: Love" (2012) followed older women engaging in sex tourism in Africa, while "Paradise: Faith" (2012) depicted a nurse becoming a Catholic missionary, and "Paradise: Hope" (2013) explored a teenage girl's stay at a diet camp. The trilogy's first installment was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and won the Austrian Film Award for Best Producer, Director, and Actress.

Documentary Style

Seidl's films are characterized by their pseudo-documentary approach, often blurring the lines between fiction and reality. He presents his subjects with an intentionally dispassionate tone, allowing viewers to draw their own interpretations.

Collaboration with Veronica Franz

Seidl has collaborated extensively with his wife, journalist Veronica Franz (born 1965). Franz has co-written the screenplays for many of his films and also scouts for actors.

Personal Life and Family

Ulrich Seidl and Veronica Franz reside in Vienna. They have two children together and have supported their extended family in the filmmaking world. Franz and Seidl's nephew, Severin Fiala, collaborated with Franz on the horror film "Goodnight Mommy" (2014).
