Birth and Early Life

On January 17, 2020, Doctor Umar T. Tairov celebrated his 70th birthday. A renowned figure in the field of dentistry, he has dedicated nearly five decades to medical practice, scientific research, education, and social service.

Education and Training

In 1971, Tairov graduated from the Dentistry Faculty of the Odessa Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov. He began his career at the Penjikent Central Regional Hospital. In 1976, he entered the clinical residency program at the Central Research Institute of Dentistry in Moscow. In 1977, he was admitted as a postgraduate at the same institute, specializing in orthognathic surgery for the treatment of malformations of the jaws.

Surgical Expertise

In 1980, Tairov defended his doctoral dissertation on "Surgical Treatment of Patients with Micrognathy, Retrognathy of the Upper Jaw, and Combined Jaw Deformities." He subsequently joined the Department of Surgical Dentistry at the Tajik State Medical Institute named after Abuali ibn Sino, where he also served as Deputy Dean of the newly established Dentistry Faculty.

Contributions to Dentistry

In 1983, Tairov played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Tajik State Medical Institute, which he headed until 2006. He is credited with organizing the Republican Dental Polyclinic and, later, the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Dentistry. In 2010, it was renamed the Republican Scientific and Clinical Institute of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Research Focus

Tairov's primary research interest has been the treatment of patients with congenital and acquired deformities of the midface, particularly the use of distraction osteogenesis. In 1986-1988, he conducted fundamental experimental research on dogs and rabbits at the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Radiology of the Academy of Sciences of the former USSR in Obninsk. His research culminated in the defense of his doctoral dissertation in 1989, entitled "Experimental and Clinical Basis for New Approaches in the Treatment of Patients with Deformations of the Midface."

Experimental Model and Findings

Tairov developed an experimental model on dogs and rabbits to study the dynamics of reparative regeneration of artificially created upper jaw defects. He demonstrated that the plastic bone of the facial skull has remarkable regenerative properties, contrary to the prevailing belief at the time that skull bones cannot regenerate.

Surgical Techniques

Tairov's experimental and clinical research led to the development of surgical techniques for the correction of midface deformities. His methods are widely cited as "Tairov's method" in surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery textbooks.

Professional Activities

As the Chief Dentist of the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan, Tairov organized three international dental congresses, bringing together leading dentists from around the world. He has also represented Tajikistani dentistry on an international stage, presenting lectures at conferences in Tehran, Moscow, Tashkent, Almaty, Istanbul, and Frankfurt am Main.
