Umberto Agnelli: A Life in Business and Politics

Early Life and Loss

Umberto Agnelli, born in Lausanne, Switzerland, on June 1, 1934, was the son of Fiat automobile company owner Eduardo Agnelli. Tragedy struck early in Umberto's life when his father died in a plane crash when he was only a year old. His mother died in a car accident eleven years later, leaving Umberto and his brother, Giovanni, as orphans.

Business Career and Fiat

In 1970, Umberto became the managing director of Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino). However, the company faced declining sales and stock devaluation. His older brother, Giovanni, known as Gianni, took over leadership of Fiat but also struggled to revive the company, despite achieving some progress.

Football and Politics

Despite his business setbacks, Umberto Agnelli found success in other ventures. From 1959 to 1961, he served as president of the Italian Football Association. In 1976, he acquired a controlling stake in Juventus football club and became its chairman.

Marriages and Family

Umberto Agnelli married twice. His first wife, Antonella Bechi Piaggio, bore him three children, only one of whom survived, Giovanni Alberto Agnelli. Giovanni Alberto tragically died of lung cancer at the age of 33. Umberto's second marriage, to Allegra Caracciolo di Castagneto, produced two children, born in 1975 and 1976. These children inherited the majority of Fiat's shares and became chairmen of Juventus.

Later Career and Legacy

In his later years, Umberto Agnelli focused on reviving Fiat's sales, which had been declining. After his death in 2004 from lung cancer, Forbes ranked him 68th on its list of the world's richest people, with an estimated net worth of 5.5 billion US dollars. Umberto Agnelli's legacy as a businessman and football enthusiast continues to be remembered in Italy and beyond.
