Biography of Umberto Guidoni

Education

Umberto Guidoni was born on August 18, 1954, in Rome, Italy. He attended the prestigious "Giano Lazio" classical lyceum in Rome and graduated in 1973. Guidoni then went on to pursue his higher education at the University of Rome, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Physics in 1978. He further pursued his studies and earned a Doctorate in Astrophysics from the same university.

Career

From 1983 to 1989, Guidoni worked in various scientific institutions in Italy. In 1989, he joined the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and began his career in space exploration. He was selected to be part of the European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut corps in 1998.

Space Activities

Guidoni's space journey began in 1996 when he was chosen as a payload specialist for the STS-75 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. The mission lasted for 15 days, 17 hours, 40 minutes, and 20 seconds. He became the first Italian to fly in space.

His second spaceflight took place in 2001 as a mission specialist on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour for the STS-100 mission. The mission lasted for 11 days, 21 hours, 30 minutes, and 00 seconds. With these two missions, Guidoni accumulated a total of 27 days, 15 hours, 10 minutes, and 20 seconds in space.

Awards and Honors

Umberto Guidoni received the NASA Space Flight Medal in 1996 and 2001 for his contributions to space exploration.

Personal Life

Umberto Guidoni is married to Mariarita Bartolacci, and they have a son named Luca.
