Biography of Andrew Allen
Andrew Allen is an American military pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He has completed three space missions, accumulating a total of 37 days, 16 hours, and 12 minutes in space.
Early Life and Education
Allen was born on August 4, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1973. After high school, he enrolled at Villanova University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanics in 1977.
Military Career
Following his university education, Allen attended flight school and completed his training in 1980. He then served at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina from 1980 to 1983, where he flew F-4 Phantom aircraft. From 1983 to 1986, he was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in California, flying F/A-18 Hornets.
In 1985, Allen completed courses in Marine Corps weapons and tactics and the Navy Fighter Weapons School. He graduated from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland, in 1987 and served as a test pilot. He accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and gained expertise in more than 30 different types of aircraft.
Astronaut Career
In 1987, Allen was selected as part of NASA Astronaut Group 12. He underwent comprehensive training for spaceflight and specifically for the Space Shuttle program. His first space mission was as a pilot on the space shuttle Atlantis (STS-46) from July 31 to August 8, 1992. The mission lasted 7 days, 23 hours, and 15 minutes.
Allen's second spaceflight took place from March 4 to March 18, 1994, aboard the space shuttle Columbia (STS-62) as a pilot. This mission lasted 13 days, 23 hours, and 17 minutes. His third and final space mission was as the commander of the space shuttle Columbia (STS-75) from February 22 to March 9, 1996. The mission lasted 15 days, 17 hours, and 40 minutes.

Having completed his three space missions, Allen continues to prepare for future spaceflights. He remains an active member of the astronaut community, contributing his expertise and experience to further space exploration.
