Early Life and Family Background
Maurytz Yuriël Cornelisse was born on December 24, 1946, in Amsterdam, to Abraham Cornelisse and Henriette Figatner. His father, a Jewish businessman, went into hiding during World War II, while his mother endured the horrors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Raised in post-war Amsterdam, Juri grew up alongside his half-sister, niece, and nephew, as well as his younger brother, Jacques, born in 1948. Career
Juri Cornelisse's career took a major turn in January 1989 when he joined the board of AFC Ajax as a member. Working closely with President Michel van Praag, he assumed responsibility for commercial affairs. Recognizing the need for a modern and expanded infrastructure, Cornelisse immediately advocated for the construction of a new 60,000-seater stadium, as he believed the existing De Meer and Olympic Stadiums no longer met the club's aspirations.
