As a legal professional, he is the founding partner and owner of the law firm Laporta & Arbós. In 1998, Laporta became the leader of the "Elefant Blau" ("Blue Elephant") movement, which rallied against the then-president of Barcelona, Luis Josep Nuñez. After an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2000, Laporta formed a working group and ran against President Joan Gaspart in the 2003 election. Promising changes to the club, Laporta garnered the support of young entrepreneurs. Following Gaspart's resignation in February 2003, Laporta won the subsequent election with 52.6% of the vote, becoming the fourth-youngest president in Barcelona's history at age 39.
