Urmas Alender

Urmas Alender was an Estonian rock singer and composer born in Tallinn, Estonia.

Rise to Fame with "Ruja"

Alender gained recognition as the lead singer of the rock band "Ruja," formed in 1971 by pianist Rein Rannap. With Ruja, he recorded numerous albums, including "Ruja," "?le m??ri" ("Through the Wall"), "Kivi veereb" ("Rolling Stone"), and "Pop Ruja."

Musical Legacy

Alender primarily performed his own compositions and those written by Rannap. He also recorded a rare rendition of Toivo Kurmet's "Flying Away," included in his album "Muusikavooluses" ("In the Flow of Music").

Tragic Demise and Remembrance

Urmas Alender tragically died on September 28, 1994, when he was among the 1049 passengers who perished in the sinking of the ferry Estonia in the Baltic Sea. He left behind a daughter, Yoko Alender.

Documentary and Legacy

Liia Sakkos' documentary "Teisel pool vett" ("Beyond the Water," 2003) pays tribute to Alender. The title is derived from a popular song performed by Alender with Ruja. Alender's legacy continues to inspire and influence the Estonian music scene.
