Early Life and Education
Yuval Waldman, born in 1949 in Lviv, Ukraine, is a celebrated violinist, conductor, and pedagogue. His early musical talent was recognized at age three, and by age eleven, he had already performed for renowned violinist David Oistrakh in Moscow.
Emigration and Name Change
In 1956, Waldman's family emigrated from Poland to Israel. There, he adopted the name "Yuval," inspired by Prime Minister Moshe Sharett's suggestion that he embrace a musical moniker.
Military Service and Artistic Debut
During the Six-Day War in 1967, Waldman played for Israeli soldiers. He also served as an officer in the Israeli military intelligence during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. After the war, he gave a concert on a captured Egyptian tank.
International Recognition
Waldman débuted in the United States in the prestigious Jeunesse Musicales series at Carnegie Hall. He has since performed as a soloist with leading orchestras around the world, establishing himself as a versatile musician with a repertoire of over 60 concert programs.
Baroque Music Advocacy
Waldman is renowned for his thoughtful and elegant performances of Baroque music. He has founded and directed several festivals dedicated to this genre, including the Bach Festival on Madeira in Portugal, the Jefferson Music Festival in Washington, D.C., and the Opus/Berkshire Chamber Music Festival in Massachusetts.
Current Engagements
Currently, Waldman serves as the Music Director of the Mozart Festival (World Bank, Washington, D.C.), the New Chamber Orchestra of America (Washington, D.C.), and Principal Conductor of the Massapequa Philharmonic (New York). He is also the first violinist of the Kinnor Quartet.
International Impact
In 2003, Waldman shared his expertise in festival management at a seminar in Cheboksary, Russia. He has also conducted master classes and concerts in Russia and the United States, fostering cultural exchange and inspiring young musicians.
