Biography of Vadim Berezovsky
Vadim Leonidovich Berezovsky was born on March 21, 1929, in the capital of Ukraine, the city of Kiev. He came from a family of civil servants and was of Ukrainian descent. Berezovsky joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1954 and had a long and distinguished career in the Soviet Navy.
Career in the Navy
Berezovsky started his military service in the Soviet Navy in 1948. He completed 10 grades at the Saratov Naval Preparatory School and graduated from the Black Sea Higher Naval School named after P. S. Nakhimov in 1952. He served on the Northern Fleet and commanded both diesel and nuclear-powered submarines.
In 1964, Berezovsky commanded the first Soviet nuclear-powered submarine, the K-40, on its maiden combat patrol. The submarine successfully completed its mission, demonstrating Berezovsky's exceptional naval skills. In 1966, he was appointed as the commander of the lead submarine of project 667a, with the tactical number "K-137," which became part of the fleet's combat core on November 5, 1967.
During the construction and testing of this strategic missile submarine (SSBN), Berezovsky made numerous suggestions for improvement and efficiency. On December 14, 1968, he led the K-137 on its first combat patrol, which was completed with an "excellent" evaluation on January 29, 1969.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his successful execution of tasks, courage, and bravery in mastering new military technology, Berezovsky was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 30, 1970. He was also presented with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (No. 10724). In September 1970, he was appointed as the commander of the 339th separate brigade of newly constructed nuclear submarines of the Northern Fleet.
Later Years and Retirement
In the following years, Berezovsky held various positions, including being a member of the Permanent Commission for the State Acceptance of Ships, the Deputy Commander of the 11th Submarine Flotilla of the Northern Fleet, and the Chief of the 1st Research Range of the Navy. He retired from active duty in June 1989 with the rank of Rear Admiral.
Berezovsky currently resides in the city of Severodvinsk, in the Arkhangelsk region. Throughout his career, he received multiple honors and awards, including the Order of Lenin, Orders of the Red Banner, and the Medal for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR, 3rd degree.
