Early Life and Education

Mykhaylo Volkov was born on April 21, 1937, in the village of Zapadinka in the Kiev Oblast of Ukraine, which is now part of Kyiv. He was trained by renowned coach Volodymyr Zamora and graduated from the Kyiv State Institute of Physical Culture.

Player Career

Volkov achieved great success as a player. He was a key member of the Soviet basketball team that won the European Championship in 1963. Additionally, he was a bronze medalist at the 1963 World Championship. At the domestic level, Volkov was crowned Soviet Champion in 1966/67 and was a multiple medalist in the Soviet Championships. He also won the Spartakiad Games in 1967.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing, Volkov became a coach. He led the Kyiv-based club "Stroitel" from 1974 to 1978, guiding them to silver medals in the 1976/77 Soviet Championship. He also held the position of State Coach of the Sports Committee of the Ukrainian SSR in the early 1980s. From 1978 onwards, Volkov worked as a teacher at the Kyiv Sports Lyceum-Boarding School. Among his notable students was Olympic champion Valery Guborov.

Legacy

Mykhaylo Volkov was a highly decorated athlete and coach. He was named a Merited Master of Sports of the USSR in 1967 and a Merited Coach of the Ukrainian SSR in 1987. Volkov's contributions to Soviet and Ukrainian basketball are still remembered and celebrated today.
