Vagif Gulizade: A Statesman and Diplomat

Vagif Mirzaga Oghlu Gulizade was an esteemed Orientalist-Arabist, diplomat, and political scientist. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, he inherited a rich academic legacy from his father, academician Mirzaga Gulizade, and his mother, writer Yagut Dilbazi.

Early Career and Academic Pursuits

After graduating from Azerbaijan State University's Faculty of Oriental Studies in 1963, Gulizade embarked on a career as an editor and program host for Baku Radio's Arabic broadcasts. He furthered his education at the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow, where he defended his dissertation in philology in 1964.

Diplomatic Service and Political Expertise

In 1970, Gulizade joined the Soviet embassy in Egypt, where he rose through the ranks from attaché to second secretary. Upon his return to Azerbaijan in 1973, he held key positions within the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, eventually becoming the head of its Culture Department. He also graduated from the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

From 1987 to 1990, Gulizade served as an advisor at the Soviet embassy in Algeria. In 1990, he accepted the post of State Counselor for Foreign Policy under Azerbaijan's first president, Ayaz Mutalibov. He continued in this role under subsequent presidents, Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev, and was a member of Azerbaijan's Security Council until 1990.

Legacy and Contributions

In 1999, Gulizade established the Caspian Region Political Studies Fund. Its Council of Chairmen included prominent figures like Henry Kissinger, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and James Baker. Gulizade's vast linguistic proficiency, spanning Russian, Arabic, English, Turkish, and conversational Farsi, facilitated his diplomacy.

According to his dossier at the Soviet Foreign Ministry, Gulizade was "extraordinarily sociable and capable of establishing trusting relationships with the highest circles of the country of residence."

Personal Life

Gulizade was married to Leyla Akhmedova and had a daughter, a son, a grandson, and three granddaughters.
